About

Join us to celebrate the closing of our newly painted shutters at the end of the working day on Sunday 20 October, from 5.30pm for drinks, closing starts at 6pm. Over the summer of 2013, Castlefield Gallery (CG) commissioned artist Nina Chua to make an artwork for the existing metal shutters that ‘wrap' around the gallery when the gallery is closed. CG and Chua are very pleased with the results and are now ready to ‘unveil' the painted shutters. This commission was funded by Arts Council England through their Grants for the Arts scheme as part of the CG organisation development project over the past 2 years. Huge thanks also goes to artist Tasha Whittle (www.thecolouringbox.co.uk) who has applied the artwork to the shutters with incredible skill and ingenuity. So come and celebrate this new permanent artwork with us on Sunday 20 October, starting at 5:30pm. More on Nina Chua (www.ninachua.com) In her drawings, Nina Chua uses a ruler and pen to inscribe lines of colour onto the surface of the paper. Gesture is intentionally limited to its most fundamental form, leaving line, colour and support to assume a pivotal role. The drawings forge a symbiotic relationship between image and process and as such emancipate from any narrative intention. Born 1980 in Manchester, Chua Graduated from MA Fine Art at Manchester School of Art in 2011. Recent Exhibitions include: What is Drawing?, Customs House Gallery, Newcastle; Some Recent Examples, Lever St, Manchester; A Book is a Performance, Centrespace, Visual Research Centre, DJCAD, Dundee; One Two, Bankley Gallery, Manchester; Cabedal, Plataforma Revolver, Lisbon, Portugal; Meanwhile See This, Castlefield Gallery, Manchester; Part of the Programme, FAFA Gallery, Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki, Finland. In 2011 she was artist in residence at 501 Artspace, Chongqing, China. Her work is held in public collection at Centre for Artists' Books, Visual Research Centre, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Scotland. More on Castlefield Gallery Founded in 1984, CG is one of Northern England's most active and successful organisations/agencies for developing emerging contemporary artists and practice. Its ambitious curated exhibitions programme responds to national and international trends, promoting artists at key stages of their careers, including subsequent Turner Prize nominees/winners and exhibitors at international festivals. Central to CG's activities is an artist development programme including the CG Associates members scheme and the recently launched New Art Spaces. CG's vision is for the North to be where artists can develop work of international standing. Its mission is to nurture talent, explore cultural trends and deepen audience's relationship to contemporary art. CG's organisation development project over the past 2 years has included a major rethink of its business strategy and business plan; marketing improvements through its websites and social media; and improvements to the internal gallery spaces and external signage, all to increase the resilience potential for the organisation. Nina Chua's artwork also marks the completion of this process. NB: The closing event also coincides with the last day of CG's current Head-to-Head exhibition featuring Nicola Ellis and Aura Satz.
