Emerging artist Mimi Winsor presents 'Grinding the Wind' on the historic site of Millbank Prison

About

Chelsea College of Art and Design will be hosting the 2013 'This is This' commission. Winning artist Mimi Winsor, a recent Fine Art graduate, will be presenting a site specific sculpture. Visitors will walk into the cobbled courtyard of the art school, built on the former site of Millbank Prison, and will be confronted by an absurd contraption. Taking inspiration from the Victorian penal system, Winsor has designed a striking mechanical sculpture that will be propelled by ‘prisoners', as they slowly pace around the structure, winding its mechanism during live performances. Whether you encounter the device being activated or at rest it is an intriguing sight, a contemporary artwork creaking in the wind echoing the courtyard's dark past.
