Tree at GalleryMuse

About

Virginia Arendt grew up in a home surrounded by many artistic genres. Her father took her to exhibitions, where he bought amazing works of art. She was drawn to photography & for her eighth birthday was given a camera.

She began to take photographs incessantly. As she developed her craft a particular interest in landscape grew & she was drawn to capture the psychological terrain of place.

Virginia's subsequent career in film production led her to assist photographer Hugo Burnand before setting up her own practice in child portraiture. In 2006 she attained a place at St Martins College of Art & Design & gained a Postgraduate Certificate in Photography.

Tree is the second part of a series that began with FORECAST. Virginia photographed the sea, horizon & sky from the same position on the West Sussex coast through differing weather conditions at various times of day, over a period of a year. FORECAST was shown at the Brighton Photo Biennale in 2010.

For Tree, she isolates the subject in her lens to seek & celebrate its' character & emphasise its' extraordinary beauty & simple existence. It was always quite clear which tree would form part of this series as she felt the trees chose her, rather than the other way round.

Search & discovery are crucial elements of the artistic pursuit for these works, yet an essential part of the final composition is created in post-production & printing, where Virginia is able to give Tree the space to reveal itself fully.

Editions from the series have been sold to art collectors in London, New York & the Hamptons. The picture used for our front cover Tree at GalleryMuse is in the private collection of the writer & director Richard Curtis.

GalleryMuse is delighted to have Virginia Arendt exhibit here & so pleased to make these works available. Roger Mavity, trustee of the Photographers Gallery, retired in 2013 as chief exec of Conran Holdings, Sir Terence Conran's group, will give a talk about Virginia's work at 11am on Sunday 27th October 2013.
