Simon Martin Talk on The Art of Edward Burra

About

Edward Burra (1905 — 1976), the British artist, worked almost exclusively in watercolour, producing vibrant depictions of sailors, pimps and tarts in Parisian nightclubs, dockside cafés in Marseilles and the streets of Harlem in the 1920s and 30s. Often grouped with the Surrealists, he also created macabre images of dancing skeletons and sinister still lives and in later years huge landscape paintings of the British Isles. Simon Martin, author of the recently published monograph on the artist, and curator of the retrospective at Pallant House Gallery, provides an insight into Burra's extraordinary life and art.
