Mr Phomer presents: 'MASS APPEAL'

You have to be a pretty brave person to mess with the likes of Kate Moss and Lady Gaga. Clearly artist Mr Phomer is a pretty brave guy. Either that, or he doesn't give a monkeys. The London-based designer, illustrators and street-artist was born in Lisbon, and is described as being ‘raised by wolves, ink, super heroes, polaroid pictures, video games, cartoons, the cold war, tape mixing, sneakers, vintage references, posters, bikes, vinyl collections and street playgrounds.' Crucially, it's said his ‘ultimate gold (not goal) is to achieve total coolness.' This month sees this particular blend of cool come to The Book Club in east London, which is to house a Mr Phomer solo show entitled Mass Appeal. Pieces on show highlight his askew, cynical take on icons of popular culture. Alongside a number of new works, the show will present pieces such as Like a Moss and I shit on Gaga, which ‘disfigure famous pop culture icons on adverts as a way to bring the street culture back to the streets and make a point about consumerism'. The pieces merge photography, illustration and intervention to create playful but confrontational works.
