About

Standpoint is proud to present the first solo show by London-based artist Corinna Till. For Talk to the Body, Corinna Till has made large textile and painted works, many of which are double-sided, and will be displayed hung and weighted from the ceiling. Each ‘painting' talks about different registers of the concepts ‘to hold' and ‘to let go', both literally (carrying the shopping, dumping the rubbish), and in terms of how we hold ourselves toward others (stance, posture - to hold back, hold together, hold tight…). Cottons, polyester and leatherette are carefully stitched and braced, pitched up and painted upon. These methodically made structures provide the architecture for Till's loose, light handling of paint. Each piece is suggestive of an action, the image sliding towards and away from representation. In one double-sided work an older woman passes a baton to a younger woman. The relationship is not as simple as one might first assume - beneath them lie piled the batons that have already been dropped. Till is interested in the line or shape that exerts force and thus creates or alleviates tensions. There are insistent reminders of our bodily selves, bodies whose requirements and vulnerabilities can be inconvenient, but can also be the source of great pleasure. Till's work is often motivated by a desire to utilise switch-over points between what is in and out of our control — finding openings for manoeuvre, changing minds and shedding skins. In previous work Till has used painted surfaces whose suggestiveness about how they are formed provoke sensations and conjectures about how surrounding structures have come to be the way they are. Here she continues her experimental engagement with painting amongst other things, reminding us of its material status as one more sticky accretion that adheres, or soaks in, to fabric. Corinna Till trained at the Slade School of Art. She has received several awards for her work including the Cocheme Fellowship, Central St Martins 2011-12; Jerwood Painting Fellowship 2010-11; 1st Prize, Milton Keynes Painting Prize 2009. Her exhibitions include 2012 LUPA (Lock Up Performance Art) Edition 12, Bethnal Green, London; 2011 Jerwood Painting Fellowship, Gallery North, Newcastle; Glyn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea and Jerwood Space, London. Collaborative projects include 2011 Reclaim the Mural, Whitechapel Gallery, with art group The Work in Progress.
