Ambiguous Thought: Artist talk by Koki Tanaka

Koki Tanaka is one of Japan's most highly-acclaimed artists from the younger generation. Having gained renown for his early video work Everything is Everything, Tanaka employs a variety of techniques in creating his works, spanning from video, photography, site-specific installation through to interventional projects. His diverse approach to art was illustrated in his exhibition Abstract Speaking: Sharing Uncertainty and Collective Acts at this year's Japan Pavilion in Venice Biennale, which explored ‘collective acts' and reflected upon the disaster of 3.11 in an abstract fashion. The Japan Pavilion received a special mention for his work. In this special artist talk, Koki Tanaka will introduce his work to date, from his time as an artist in Japan and Los Angeles, where he is currently based. Considering the philosophy and inspirations behind his art practice, Tanaka will identify links throughout his work and how they led him to create his most extensive and high-profile showcase to date at this year's Venice Biennale, and what he wishes to express when there are many other art practices concerning the disaster. Joined in conversation by independent curator Zoë Gray, they will together further explore Tanaka's changes in approach throughout his career, whilst considering the impact global mobility has made on Japanese artists.
