Reuben Powell. "Hotel Elephant' - construction drawings of the Elephant and Castle"11. Jan - 7. Feb 08 / ended Morley Gallery
Reuben Powell is local Artist in Residence in the Elephant and Castle critically documenting the 1.2 billion pound regeneration of the area. His work takes the form of large-scale drawings in graphite and oil paint on paper. They are produced from extensive research made on the demolition and building sites in the Elephant and Castle ‘regeneration zone' over the past year. The project is to follow this transformation to produce a permanent archive of one of the largest regeneration schemes of its kind in Europe.
The Elephant and Castle Regeneration Drawings are all on a very large scale (all over 2m). They are made quickly; using graphite and oil paint on paper and have a powerful immediacy which incorporates an intricacy that belies the crucial energy of these works.
"These really are spectacular pictures. I do not know where else I have seen anything like them or where this project will take the artist. There is something here of an unstoppable energy. This exhibition has to be one of the best places to start the artistic year in London."
