About

Napoli, a delightful city in the south of Italy, tainted with tales of murder & corruption, comes to life in this photographic project from Kane Hulse. Focusing on the city's brutal shapes & optimistic colours, Kane flaunts this beautiful, once prohibited city as a location worthy of its final destination on the classical European Grand Tour. Composed in retaliation to dull travel photography & disruptive media reports regarding the local mafia, this project exposes the beautiful truth that is Napoli. Showered in zestful colours born out of its Mediterranean heritage, Dumas once rightly described Napoli as the flower of paradise. The city has undergone several regime changes due to its strategic location as one of the oldest inhabited locations worldwide, which is reflected in its architecture and captured in untamed fashion. The deadly Vesuvius, overlooking and keeping a watchful eye on its city ready to explode creates an inspiringly energetic approach to life and this positivity runs throughout the pictures. Throughout the book, shapes & colours from every aspect of Neapolitan culture come together to work visually alongside each other. Settings poetically contrast each other from flare orchestrating football hooligans to old men blissfully driving their buggies along the promenade. Obscure shapes combine with brutalist inspired takes on this historical location placing Napoli firmly on the map as one of Europe's most beautiful cities. The book is to be sold exclusively in Paul Smith stores prior to the exhibition curated by Kevin Morosky, which will take place between the 23rd - 30th September (Private view 23rd September) at the Embassy Tea Gallery, London. For a taste of Napoli throughout the week of the exhibition, bring a copy of the book into Pizza Pilgrims to receive two for one on pizzas.
