Fort-Da: Four Performances Part 1 — Mark Wayman, Adrian Lee, Adam James

About

Probing the boundaries between performance art and dance, Siobhan Davies Dance presents a collection of ambitious performance works at their Studios this autumn. In Fort-Da, curated by Ali MacGilp, four leading performance artists have created works that experiment with choreography to resolve situations of social conflict. Mark Wayman focuses on the neighbouring Elephant & Castle roundabout and invites us to examine the mysterious silver box that lies at the heart of its twisted pathways. Taking the form of a tour, Round About Box offers alternative histories to the structure, with Wayman's intense verbal descriptions disturbing our perception of what previously seemed familiar. Adam James uses the techniques of live action role play (LARP) to uncover hidden narratives in the darker recesses of society. In I know you are but what am I? James stages a series of confrontations between two opposing groups in a playground setting. Overseen by two games masters, the performers will work through personal experience in an attempt to understand ‘outsiderness'. Adrian Lee's Tub-thumper explores the theatrical choreography of an Evangelist preacher during a YouTube sermon. As the preacher paces and gesticulates emphatically, Lee deconstructs the complex pattern of movements and actions he uses to manipulate the audience's emotions. Elsewhere in the performance season you can see performances from choreographer Joe Moran on 27-18 September, as well as the final Fort-Da performance, William Hunt's Mobile, on 29 November. You can also take part in a salon on 25 October bringing together artists, curators and dancers to discuss the relationship between dance and performance art practices, and hear Fort-Da's curator, Ali MacGilp, in conversation with William Hunt, on 12 November.
