About

Paul Kindersley & Simon Foxall present an exhibition that demonstrate the importance of drawing and the themes of pop culture, homosexuality and camp to their practices. Drawing for both artists is an activity of immediacy as well as a process of adoration and meditation.

Exploring various channels of queer self-identification within dominant cultural spectacle, Paul and Simon explore the lines between fantasy and reality, escapism and camp as meaningful modes of self expression and tools to locate subjectivities. Their work both parallels and parodies the subversion and reclamation of popular culture by queer culture, drawing on glamour, eroticism, melodrama and camp and their potential to innovate and propose.

The works bounce off one another, collide, mesh and repel. Jostling for space, like scenes in a film, united by a particularly homespun, direct and low-fi approach to materiality - most of the drawings are in marker pen and Biro and on standard A4 paper. In this sense, the work begins with drawing as the base from which to manipulate and refer to conventions of art-making and art?s facility to challenge and activate, particularly in a art industry that is still nervous of taking queer art seriously, all too readily allowing the subject to be simply ?gay?. Paul and Simon have developed strategies of communication that both reflect that nervousness and seek to communicate beyond it, taking full ownership of the inherently politicised nature of queer work.

Simon Foxall graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2012. He is a painter, felt pen sensualist, writer and radio meanderer who goes to the gym but otherwise stays in a lot, despite living in London. He is represented by Simon Oldfield Gallery, London

Paul Kindersley graduated from Chelsea College of Art in 2009, he is an artist, stalker, makeup enthusiast, pervert and youtuber based in London. @PaulKindersley
