Join Professor Ian Rogerson for an insight into the life and work of Barnett Freedman. Born in the East End of London in 1901 to Russian-Jewish immigrant parents Freedman later attended the Royal College of Art with Edward Bawden & Eric Ravilious. From 1930, his work was in constant demand through his mastery of autolithography. Freedman produced a steady stream of book jackets, prints and posters for such organisations as London Transport, Shell-Mex and the Post Office, and became widely known through his design for the King George the Fifth Jubilee stamps. Following his work as an official war artist, Freedman became the key figure in the creation and printing of the famed Lyons Lithographs, as technical advisor for the Lyons Lithograph scheme and artist of three prints People, Music-Still Life and Window Box. Professor Ian Rogerson is former Librarian of Manchester Metropolitan University and currently Research Fellow at the John Rylands Library, University of Manchester.
