About

Opening July 2013, Halcyon Gallery will hold an exciting Summer Exhibition showcasing works from nine of their contemporary artists. Originally envisioned and curated in the figurative vein, the show is interwoven throughout with themes of beauty, womanhood and the over-indulgent cult of celebrity. Stemming from a focus of works by American photographer, David LaChapelle, one will subsequently find hand-carved, marble sculptures by Mauro Perucchetti, recognisable portraiture by Mitch Griffiths and a stunning collection of portfolio photography by the late Eve Arnold, documenting her close relationship with famed actress, Marilyn Monroe. Exhibited for the first time with Halcyon Gallery is Spanish artist, Ernesto Cánovas. Employing a multi-layered practice of painting, drawing, printmaking and photography, Cánovas' artworks are heavily worked and only realised through careful contemplation. Exuding an ironic and somewhat discerning sense of obscurity, the subject matter is not always clarified. By combining the vocabulary of Pop Art with sources from old and new media, he successfully produces work that captures snapshots of the present-day, presenting the viewer with a duality from which the perceived truths are questioned and refashioned. Cánovas was selected for The New Contemporaries Exhibition in Edinburgh and was awarded The Stevenson Award for Painting in 2010. He recently exhibited at Saatchi Gallery and Channel 4”²s New Sensations 2011 and received the Premio Ora 2013 arts award. Halcyon Gallery's Summer Exhibition will also include works by artists Pedro Paricio, Santiago Montoya, David Wightman and Lorenzo Quinn. The site-specific Chihuly Illuminated exhibition will continue, displaying unique artwork by world-renown glass artist, Dale Chihuly, with both exhibitions running through September 2013.
