The People's Choice13. Jul - 15. Sep 13 / ended Mercer Art Gallery
Opening times: Tuesday - Saturday and Bank Holiday Mondays 10am until 5pm, Sundays 2pm until 5pm.
A new exhibition at the Mercer Art Gallery, The People’s Choice, features artworks from the Harrogate district’s fine art collection all selected by local people. Everybody has a story to tell to explain their choice, often quite personal, details of which will be displayed alongside each picture in the exhibition.
Freelance curator Sheila Asante has worked with everyone from a Knaresborough Youth Club to famous Harrogate actor Hugo Speer to choose their favourite pictures.
• Mayor of Harrogate Michael Newby chose a Yorkshire landscape by Angus Rands – ‘I have walked along a beck like this many times feeling the pull of the water, the blue of which stands out in this picture. Indeed the eye is taken quite strongly along the flow of the beck from where the sheep are grazing to the small waterfall...’
• Frank Milner, a popular visiting lecturer, chose cartoons by Phil May and comments: ‘Phil May was the greatest British cartoonist of the late nineteenth century. The painter Whistler thought him the outstanding black and white artist of his day. For me he is a hero and Yorkshire’s best draughtsman. I have loved his work for over 50 years since I was a schoolboy.’
• Local historian Malcolm Neesam chose Simon Palmer’s large watercolour landscape Woodland Plunge Pool because…”it is an intense evocation of the 1940's and its crises and struggles.”
The People’s Choice exhibition runs from 13 July 2013 to 15 September 2013.
