Learning & Engagement Showcase & Carwan Gallery Pop Up

About

The Mosaic Rooms is pleased to present our first exhibition of work arising from the 2013 learning and engagement programme. The mixed media exhibition will include furniture and objects, photomontage artworks, oral history testimonies and artist reflections, resulting from various projects each exploring notions of home.

Students on the FdA Interior Design course at Chelsea College of Art worked with family members to uncover memories of domestic practice. The resulting furniture and artifacts express characteristics of home and tap into cultural understandings of domesticity. Project led by Fernando Rihl and Reem Charif.

Young people in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea worked with artist duo kennardphillipps to create photomontage artworks that express what home means to them and what it means to feel 'at home' in oneself and in society. Developed in collaboration with Making Communities Work and Grow, Chelsea Youth Club, Earl's Court Youth Club, and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Youth Support and Development Service.

Members of the Yemeni community in London interviewed one another as part of an oral history project inspired by the exhibition Last of the Dictionary Men. Their testimonies reveal their sense of belonging.

There will also be written reflections on home by some of our recent exhibiting artists.

As part of this exhibition we are pleased host an exclusive Carwan Gallery pop up shop! Founded by the architects Pascale Wakim and Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte in 2010, Carwan began as the first pop-up gallery in the Middle East. Established in Beirut, the gallery exhibits limited-edition pieces in art and design events throughout the world, with a focus on internationalizing design in the Middle East. Carwan features the work of international cutting-edge designers of unique contemporary objects such as limited-edition furniture, lighting, and objets d'art.
