Photorealism: 50 Years of Photorealistic Painting
In late 1960s America, a new movement of artists began painting realistic depictions of everyday objects and scenes – gleaming automobiles, iconic highways, storefronts and diners – which at first glance appeared to be photographs. These artists were initially met with intense criticism but the photorealism movement has changed the way we see art forever.
Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery is proud to be the only UK venue to display this first and largest European retrospective. Showcasing key photorealist artists from the 1960s to the present day, the exhibition explores the questions and debates raised by the movement on what makes an authentic image and the ways in which we perceive the world. In the Gas Hall.
