Bouvetøya: A Cultural History of an Isolated Landmass

About

Space In Between is delighted to announce a new publication by artist Freddy Dewe Mathews. Designed as a field manual Bouvetøya: A Cultural History of an Isolated Landmass uses excerpts from dubious historical expeditions and fictions set on the island of the same name to point at the emotional resonance of a place that despite being real exists to us more as fantasy than reality. Paired with this, is photography selected from the archive at the Norwegian Polar Institute in Tromso, specifically from a scientific expedition to the island in 1978. This trip is responsible for the most comprehensive understanding we have of this uninhabited and seldom visited land.
Freddy Dewe Mathews is an artist who uses archival material to make work that looks at human impositions on landscape and community; where exploration, colonisation or drives for infrastructure meet existing cultures or places. His interest is in how these actions become tangible, whether as a mark in the landscape or in the emotional life of an individual or community.

We are pleased that Bouvetøya: A Cultural History of an Isolated Landmass will be launched in conjunction with the exhibition Imagining Islands: Artists and Escape, organised by the students of the MA Curating the Art Museum, at The Courtauld Gallery (June 20-July 21 2013). The Courtauld Gallery is open until 6pm on Saturdays and guests are invited to view the exhibition during the launch. The first 50 people to attend the launch of the publication will receive free admission to The Courtauld Gallery from 3.30pm until the gallery closes at 6pm.
