Nick Bodimeade: Solo Show

Using short, close-set brightly coloured brushstrokes, Nick Bodimeade begins to construct his peopled beach scenes with the shadows and highlights of their bodies. Finally, the spaces between the figures, through to the sand or surf behind, are painted with staccato strokes, creating edges and territories to the initial marks, and revealing both single and group forms. Bodimeade's works shimmer with light and a restless energy, where figures are boldly defined by the space they inhabit one minute, and then dissolve into it the next. In these paintings, the act of looking is a dynamic one as the eye seeks to find a balance between abstraction and representation, the particular and the general, and the individual within the crowd. Born in 1957 in Richmond, London, Nick has a BA in Fine Art from the university of Wolverhampton and, after many years as a lecturer in Fine Art at a number of art colleges, now lives and works as a full time painter near Lewes in East Sussex. He exhibits widely in London and the South.
