Best known for his seductively glossy paintings that draw on popular imagery, Gary Hume is associated with the so-called Young British Artists generation. Hear him talk about his practice as a painter with writer, novelist and cultural commentator Michael Bracewell. Gary Hume lives and works in London and upstate New York, USA. Solo shows include Sà £o Paulo Bienal (1996), Venice Biennale (1999) Whitechapel Art Gallery, London (1999), the National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh (1999), Fundaçà £o La Caixa, Barcelona (2000), Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin (2003), Kunsthaus Bregenz (2004) and the Kestnergesellschaft, Hannover (2004). Group shows include Tate Britain, London (2004), Louisiana Museum, Denmark (2004), Kunsthalle Basel (2002) and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2001). Michael Bracewell is the author of six novels and four works of non-fiction, including Re-make/Re-model 2006 and England Is Mine 1997. He writes widely on modern and contemporary British art, and is a regular contributor to Frieze magazine. His most recent book The Space Between: Collected Writings on Art 2012 is published by Ridinghouse.
