Lucy McLauchlan: Vessels in Vain

Highly influenced by her hometown and its dynamic between industrial history, brutalist architecture and untouched countryside, she makes painted environments. These, in contrast to Birmingham's vibrant counter-culture usually more associated with heavy metal, portray flowing post-psychedelic forms that cover walls and ceilings to create environments that can include a wide assortment of found objects like drum kits or kitsch exotica incorporated into the overall design. McLauchlan's work frequently features recurring motifs that she paints with little or no preparation, executed almost entirely in black and white often using markers and pens with indian ink that allow her to act quickly and to draw in series of flowing marks that once made cannot be undone or covered over. This handmade approach to her work is something that she maintains in opposition to the highly technological techniques of contemporary graphics. McLauchlan's site specific murals and improvised paintings are organic and delicately intuitive appearing on public buildings, water towers, breast moulds, riot shields, doorways, driftwood and even a Rolls Royce.
