While the Towner Collection is perhaps best known for its landscapes, portraiture also forms an important and fascinating strand.

The portraits and people in our collection often represent a thread of connections between artists, subjects, and those who commissioned the portrait or donated it to the collection.

This display draws out some of these relationships, stimulating us to imagine the conversations that might have occurred between artist and sitter.

Well known artists such as Edward Bawden, David Bomberg, Christopher Wood and Ugo Rondinone are represented, whilst some intriguing lesser
known artists and works are also revealed.

A variety of images and styles are on display ' including historical and formal
portraiture, narrative scenes and self portraits ' as well as photography and installation.
