About

living + working in cardiff since graduating from the university of wales institute cardiff in 1997, oakes has exhibited widely throughout wales + has been a part of the gallery's pool of artists since the very beginning. oakes has a distinguishing style of painting — his work is often loose + unfinished but coupled with strong mark-making + meticulous detailing oakes takes inspiration from imagery in the news + press, giving a relevant + urgent feel to his practice which, while painting numerous works at any one time, becomes part of a larger narrative + commentary. his latest body of work, entitled physiognomy [the art of judging human character from facial features], depicts figures recently in the news + superheroes in guises, with oakes' prevailing dry humour a constant strand throughout oakes describes his work as an investigation into how a personality can be split, segregated + utilised for specific purposes, with this series of works created ‘as a personal + universal exploration of heroism, celebrity, self confidence, lies, deceit, creativity + tea...' all work will be for sale + collectorplan is available. for further info about the artist, see the gallery's website gallery-ten.co.uk
