About
Please join us for a C4RD Resident Artist Orlando Campbell's exhibition of Works in Progress.Seen through the lense of his contemporary sensibility, Orlando investigates the frenzy of early Modernism - of Mallarme's Paris of the nineteenth century and of the broad palette and metaphysical gestures of artists such as Gustave Moreau or Odilon Redon. Collapsing biology and taxonomy amongst other scientific borrowings, he pursues the aesthetics of indeterminacy and the open work.
Of particular note are the double-sided panels, where he plays with the schism and displacement of collage that occurs between the two images, which, singular to Campsbell's work, are mediated by the object itself. The distance across the depth of the tablet on which the images sit is a passage of meditation, mediation and meaning that demands a hybrid reading across painting and sculpture.
Campbell's attention to detail, his material play, and the evident deftness with which he handles his craft are critical to the success of his outcomes. These 'formations' as he` calls them, embody both frozen moments and activated time; both the Petrie dish and the organic proliferation of the objects of scrutiny. What becomes ultimately possible in this mixture is a sense of the work as a discrete ecology operating within a new aesthetic.
