Exhibition of new paintings, drawings and collage by Lukáš Malina
Lukas Malina's first UK solo exhibition showcases a selection of paintings, drawings and collage characterized by elements of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions, non sequiturs and macabre imagery.
Malina's practice attempts to give visual form to the dreams of his childhood. Combining a mishmash of iconography gleaned from historical and contemporary mass media sources, Malina's work draws on a diverse range of imagery from hard-boiled detective novels, vampire and werewolf stories, medieval battle scenes, LA film noir, biblical stories, animated kids films and Renaissance paintings. His works exist like memories from dreams or scenes from a film caught between switching channels late at night as a child, we catch a glimpse of something and are forced to imagine a narrative, to question what went before and what will come after. His fantasy landscapes reference his background working in computer game design, whilst other works draw more clearly on art historical as well as literary references such as Poe, Eliade, Yeats and Machen.
