PAPER THIN
About
Bethan Lloyd Worthington || Jaime Tarazona || Abbi Torrence || Mario Pires Cordeiro || Vincent Troia || Jess Littlewood || Inge JacobsenBEARSPACE presents Paper Thin, a group exhibition bringing together a wide selection of exciting young artists working with the medium of paper. Each artist subverts, subtracts and sensationalises paper in their practice, playing with the surface of a thin but powerful element intrinsic to the history of art.
The artists in Paper Thin exploit this medium - from graph paper to magazine collage, digital prints to graphite drawing. Throughout art history paper has been a foundational medium in an artist's working process, from preliminary sketches in a humble sketchbook to the newspaper collages of page three girls made famous by the likes of Sarah Lucas and the Guerilla Girls. Paper Thin celebrates the surface and texture of paper and the many different ways it can be put to work.
The throwaway nature of paper creates a fascinating reading of the work, often these works seem to reveal the the raw mechanisms of making work through mark making, working out and placement, such as Marcel Duchamp's 'The Bride Stripped Bare.' In other cases ideas are worked externally to the paper, for instance digitally, before being applied to paper.
