In conjunction with the exhibition Montezland ,ROKEBY hosts a Jack Smith screening of short films Jungle Island, 1967 and I Was a Male Yvonne De Carlo, 1967-70's. Mario Montez stars in both films; Jungle Island being inspired by 40's Hollywood starlet Maria Montez from whom Mario takes his name. Conrad Ventur will discuss Jack Smith and Mario Montez With Dr Gavin Butt, Reader in Visual Cultures, Goldsmiths, whose forthcoming book includes a chapter on Smith's infatuation with Maria Montez. ROKEBY presents a group exhibition with Jack Smith, Conrad Ventur, Andy Warhol and others who worked with underground film star Mario Montez through 14.03.2013.
