Surface Gallery is pleased to announce our third exhibition of the year. From the 13th to the 23rd March, artists Holly James and Anna Salmane will be showing their latest video, photography, drawing and textile pieces in the exhibition Pert&Simple.

“Pert” and “Simple” are two adjectives that James and Salmane most frequently use when discussing art. However, the artists cannot agree whether these terms should be ascribed to the aesthetics of their work, the conceptual aspects of their practice, or their personal beliefs as to what art in general should be; the exhibition visitors are invited to judge for themselves.

Holly James (b. 1989, Lancaster, England) uses textiles in a variety of ways, applying a number of techniques such as weaving and rug making. In her practice, James also utilises analogue photography and drawing and is interested in unconventional ways of exhibiting her work. James graduated from Goldsmiths College, University of London in the summer of 2012 and has been exhibiting her work since 2010.

Anna Salmane (b. 1980, Riga, Latvia) works with photography, video art and multimedia installations, drawing inspiration from personal experience, philosophy and science. Salmane has been participating in exhibitions since 2001, her most recent solo show took place at the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art in Riga. Anna is currently studying at Goldsmiths College, University of London.
