Dead Actor No.9
Karin Kihlberg & Reuben Henry - Fallen Idols
Magpie Arts presents Karin Kihlberg & Reuben Henry for its inaugural exhibition at The Hackney Picturehouse.
Kihlberg & Henry have been chosen to open the programme as their works engages with cinema and popular culture in a refreshing and insightful manner.
The works look at a variety of subjects that include memory, death, censorship and the relationship that can be built on these aspects between a film and its audience. “Acting Dead” (2008-10) is a series of portrait drawings of actors playing dead in movies. Removed from the cinematic system of cause and effect and rendered in graphite, these narrative images enter the currency of the still life, forcing an alteration to how such 'acted' death is consumed. They mark a moment in which the actors not only die in the narrative in which they play, but in which their acting suffers a certain death; their faces relaxed, flesh submitting to gravity, relaxed and still. In this way, they are portraits of actors who have
slipped away from the cinematic narrative on several levels.
“This Story is About a little Boy” is a reconstruction of a film according to its recollection through subjective memory. A friend of the artists was asked to recall a film which had moved him in some way and which made an impression on his life. His recollection of The Fallen Idol by Carol Reed was recorded and used as the narrative structure to re-edit the visuals of the film. Confusions, alterations, hesitations and added events were reanimated in the reconstruction of the film-as-memory.
Karin Kihlberg & Reuben Henry live and work in London.
Magpie Arts are developing a programme at The Hackney Picturehouse that is focused on cinema as its subject. The intention is to work with artists who investigate elements of cinema within their arts practice. The aim is to exhibit a variety of artists whose works offer a varied and incisive view of the subject of cinema.
