elfyn lewis 'mor o gariad' acrylic on board 2011

recent works by painters elfyn lewis + menna angharad

elfyn lewis’ colourful abstract paintings have been widely exhibited throughout the uk + worldwide, and are held in a number of public + private collections. in 2009 lewis was awarded the gold medal for fine art at the national eisteddfod of wales + later went on to be named welsh artist of the year in 2010. his love of place is a clear strand throughout his work which are, as he describes, ‘layered time after time until the upper layer explodes + transforms from its volcanic creation into a vivid landscape’

dividing her time between brecon + france, angharad’s subdued still lifes are gaining a well deserved following + are part of numerous private + public collections, including the jerwood foundation collection. through presenting pillows + cloths away from their original anchored context, angharad’s work forces closer study, contemplation + appreciation of such mundane objects

the work of both painters are contrasting – elfyn’s work impasto + colourful, menna’s work sgraffito + monotone; elfyn’s focus is the landscape, menna’s is the domestic; but both are in unison in their contemporary approach to traditional fine art subjects
