23. Feb - 16. Jun 13 / ends in 29 days Pallant House Gallery
R.B.Kitaj, Priest, Deckchair and Distraught Woman, 1961 © the Estate of RB Kitaj
R. B. Kitaj (1932-2007) was one of the most significant painters of the post-war period. His work defied the trend in abstract art prevalent in the 1960s and brought him to the forefront of British figurative painting. In spring 2012 Pallant House Gallery and the Jewish Museum London will concurrently present the only UK showing of the major retrospective R.B. Kitaj: Obsessions, currently at the Jewish Museum, Berlin.
The Chichester and London shows will be the first major retrospective in the UK since his 1994-5 exhibition at the Tate Gallery and the first comprehensive exhibition of the oeuvre of Kitaj since his death in 2007.
The exhibition at Pallant House Gallery, subtitled 'Analyst for Our Time' will feature over 50 major paintings, sketches and prints presenting an overview of all periods of Kitaj's extensive oeuvre from the 1960s to his death in 2007.
