About
The Centre for Recent Drawing presents "Trazo Sacro" a survey of recent drawing from Southern Mexico, featuring the work of Bertin Cruz, Angel Flores, Noe Amor, Alejandro Mendez Perez, Dinora, Fabricio Molina, Frank Cordova Zapien, Nacho Chincoya, Alejandro Tevera and Gely Pacheco.'The exhibition examines the work of artists of the Chiapas region to connect through their drawings to a fundamental element in Mexican culture in both the pre-Hispanic and colonial period that endures in the contemporary period: living with the sacred.
Historically the sacred emerges in the representational contexts of codex, Tequitqui art, the Baroque sculpture, votive paintings and worship of Holy Death. These representations contrast sharply with current contemporary art production which translates the sacred from iconography to through the creative process itself or the institutions that represent it.
Ultimately this exhibition demonstrates how engagement with the sacred challenges artists to set a face to that which is by definition absolute and invisible.' HL
Conceived by artist Julio Lopez and selected by C4RD's Andrew Hewish.
