Rose Hilton who is known for her exploration of colour and formal invention in her luminous oil paintings uses pastel as a medium for getting information for these works.
“I like the way pastels can be pushed around and blended, in a way like oil paint”, Rose explains and indeed her pastels have the same sensibility as her paintings in terms of vibrancy of colour.
A consummate draughtswoman, this medium is ideally suited for the artist to sketch and obtain information for paintings. This show brings together a collection of her latest pastels of figures and landscapes. Never academic, the work is remarkable for its freshness and searching quality. Clearly this artist in many ways, like her heroes Bonnard and Degas, is interested in getting down information that she can then use in her studio. It is this intention to use the pastels as working sketches for the paintings together with an assuredness of this graphic medium that gives these pictures their vitality and charm.
