About

For Aping the Beast, Serena Korda realises an ambitious project involving a hand-crafted 15 foot monster and archetypal B-movie creature costumes which will be activated in participatory performances with local school children. Aping the Beast uses animal symbolism and folklore to explore our fear of the unknown and how we have evolved to confront these fears through imitation, spectacle, ritual and humour. As a further exploration of the place of spirituality and superstition in secular society, the show also includes a body of work depicting black cats, 'auditioned' by Korda, for their fortune-telling abilities. Aping the Beast is co-commissioned by an Artsadmin Jerwood Commission, Camden Arts Centre, London and Grundy Art Gallery, Blackpool.
