Hymns to the Light - Les Canards Chantants

Part of Coastival - A Different View.
Classical music performance with a quartet on the upper balcony of the Rotunda.
Les Canards Chantants is a chamber ensemble specializing in vocal music from the Renaissance. Formed at the University of York in 2010, the "singing ducks" are devoted to exploring new and creative ways to bring early music to life. Their debut season included a sell-out performance at the National Centre for Early Music in 2011, and they received a Vice Chancellor's Gold Award for Outstanding Achievement at the University of York in 2012. They have recently performed at Ripon Cathedral, Grimsby Minster and on the Paxton Festival.
The singers performing are:-
Sarah Holland - soprano
Robin Bier - alto
Edward Ingham - tenor
Graham Bier - bass
Programme
In a time before electrical lighting, the church services connected with sunset and the evening showed a preoccupation with the oncoming darkness. Much of the music written for Vespers and Compline in the Renaissance were appeals for the return of light in the morning. Weaving together their voices in the acoustic of the Rotunda, Les Canards Chantants brings a selection of beautiful music about the longing for light
