Renata Lucas: Resident
About
Gasworks has invited Brazilian artist Renata Lucas to realise a site-specific, architectural intervention. Initially, Lucas will take up a three-month residency during which she will develop and bring to fruition a long-term proposition to establish a new and sensitive relationship between the building and its neighbourhood. The starting point in Lucas' practice is an analysis of the social codes and architectural patterns of the commissioned site. From this detailed observation of her surroundings, she looks to identify particular characteristics that are out of sight or have been taken for granted.
In the first weeks of her residency at Gasworks, the artist will research and make initial transformations within the internal relations of the Gasworks' building. These will consist of architectural reconfigurations and interruptions, such as the repositioning of walls and alterations to the floor, doors and lights.
For a month, after the initial research stages, the residency will overlap with Lucas' exhibition, initially showing a space subject to a slow and minimal transformation. Durational and evolutional, but performed outside opening hours, Lucas' intervention will reach its final expression at the end of her residency and will remain visible to the public in its evolved, concluded state for a further four weeks.
