Twentieth Century Scottish Art from the Permanent Collection

Dundee's impressive collection of modern Scottish art was the subject of the hugely successful touring exhibition Consider the Lilies: Scottish Painting 1910-1980 curated by Alice Strang from the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

Drawing from Consider the Lilies, this new exhibition focuses more closely on artists with links to Dundee - artists who were born here, worked locally or were associated with the Dundee College of Art, which became Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, now a faculty of the University of Dundee.

The artists represented in Reflections from the Tay fall into four main groups. The Tayport Artists' Circle: a small and mutually supportive colony of artists, who exhibited between 1905 and 1907. Dundee ‘Classicists’ including James McIntosh Patrick and Edward Baird, who were strongly influenced by a close study of the techniques of the Italian Renaissance. Seven Painters in Dundee, a group of vital and highly individual painters, were brought together in a Scottish Arts Council touring exhibition in 1970.

Dundee has an important collection of works by the Scottish Colourists, who make up the final group in this exhibition. Included alongside them are works by John Maclauchlan Milne, a Dundee artist working in a similar manner, often described as the “fifth Colourist”.
