Seckin Pirim: Discipline Factory

About

Pirim in association with Gallery Merkur will exhibit ten recent works from his ‘Discipline Factory' series, which were recently exhibited in Istanbul to great critical acclaim. These abstract sculptures provide a commentary on the restrictions that society can impose on our lives, sometimes obstructing the choices we are free to make. It is telling therefore, that the series was started whilst Pirim was serving his six months military service. Though the work is not a direct response to Pirim's situation, he describes them as ‘materialised forms of the reaction of social and personal structures to the act of being controlled'. The works focus on the exploration on how we want to live our lives and how we are told to. This is echoed in the colours, layers and forms of the work. There is a contrast between geometric, methodical shapes and smooth, slippery surfaces to represent restrictions versus freedom. Pirim's idea stems from a playground slide — the anticipation of climbing the squared steps and the freedom of sliding down the smooth metal is something experienced in childhood and is a feeling carried forward into our adult lives. Alongside the sculptures there will also be a series of 2D works on paper. Pirim's work can be found in some of Turkey's best known collections including the Eczacibasi, Sabanci and Borusan Collections. Internationally his work continues to demand significant attention. Currently works have been acquired for private and public collections in China, Taiwan, USA and Italy to name but a few countries.
