Encounters With Drawing: an exhibition of drawing research by Angela Rogers

About

Avenue Gallery is pleased to present Encounters with Drawing, an exhibition by Sussex-based artist Angela Rogers which explores drawing as a means of social encounter through the process of collaborative drawing. Central to the exhibition will be a series of works entitled ‘drawing conversations', in which Angela investigates the actuality of one-to-one human encounters through drawing with strangers she meets in galleries and other public places to create collaborative artworks which form a concrete record of that exchange. Angela explains: “I have always been curious about chance encounters, and I wanted to see if I could use drawing to meet people by asking them to make a drawing with me. After initial protestations ‘I'm no good at drawing!', I explained we would take it in turns to draw on the same piece of paper like a conversation, most people were reassured and keen to get going. What could drawing the spaces between us reveal? What could I learn from using drawing as means of social encounter? “ These questions became the subject of Angela's PhD research, and alongside the ‘drawing conversations' she will be displaying large research maps that she used to document and manage the research process. In contrast, she will also be showing a series of personal drawings made in the studio, which bring the openness and spontaneity from the collaborative drawing process to a different kind of visual encounter. Encounters With Drawing will run from 2-30 November and is open to the public Mondays-Fridays 10am-4pm. Admission is free. Avenue Gallery is located in The University of Northampton's Avenue Campus on St. George's Avenue, Northampton NN2 6JD. For more information about the exhibition please contact the Gallery on 01604 893046 or email gallery@northampton.ac.uk.
