Marius Bercea
About
Eleven is delighted to present The Games We Played, the first UK solo exhibition of works by the young Cluj painter, Marius Bercea. Inspired by what he describes as 'an intensely personal archive' - a melange of family photographs, newspaper clippings and tales from his family's history which he weaves together with memories of childhood games, school trips and the rituals of daily childhood routine - Bercea has produced a new series of intriguing and delicately beautiful figurative paintings specifically for this exhibition which runs from 17th October to 17th November 2007.Far from banishing us to the role of outsider or voyeur, these highly personal and poignant works elicit our empathy. The prompt for us to begin searching our thoughts might be a sensitively described scene that resonates with our own memories, a charged exchange between figures or a spontaneous gesture, but the consistent factor is that each depicted subject possesses a particular significance for Bercea ' a trace to an actual experience. It is the grounding of each work in an historical event that lends weight to Bercea's practice, helps us to forge a connection and communicates a sense of experience that transcends any one specific geographical or geopolitical perspective ' for Bercea's work communicates a universal truth - the shared human need to revisit and remember the past.
