Anne Thalheim - Screen

About

Anne Thalheim was born in Canada and studied at University Laval in Quebec. She currently lives and works in North Yorkshire and her work deals with emotion and power in a visual, three-dimensional poetic form. Using household materials often sourced from DIY catalogues and hardware stores, she creates unique sculptural objects, transforming them through craft techniques such as basketry, sewing, needlework and Japanese armour construction. The resulting works are alluring and seductive, transposing everyday materials into visually stunning but also slightly alarming pieces, that are difficult to classify but beautiful in spite of this. For her exhibition at 20-21 Visual Arts Centre, Anne has created a spectacular new work responding to the former Victorian church building housing the main gallery spaces. Using traditional techniques and modern materials she has made a new installation based on the traditional ornate decorative screen that separates the altar from the congregation in Anglican churches.
