Gallery Talk with Michael Cook

About

Michael Cook will talk about his work in the exhibition to be followed by a screening of the short film BabaKiueria, a satirical examination of black-white relations in Australia. This film won the 1987 United Nations Media Peace Prize. Michael Cook, (b. Australia 1968), whose paternal heritage is Bidjara from south-west Queensland, is a relatively new arrival on the contemporary art scene having worked for the past twenty-five years as a fashion photographer. A spectacular artistic debut has seen his impressive body of work collected by major galleries including the National Gallery of Australia and the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Winner of several prestigious art prizes, Cook is one of a handful of Australian artists selected to exhibit at the 7th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT7) at QAGOMA, Brisbane. In his first London exhibition, Cook presents a series of ten profound and seductive narrative photographic prints, Broken Dreams, which was most recently exhibited at the 2nd National Indigenous Art Triennial at the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. This series illustrates an imagined journey from England to Australia as seen through the mind of a young Aboriginal woman. Cook's use of a redacted colour palette and scale emphasises the poetic, ethereal dreamscape in which his character moves. Accompanying Broken Dreams will be individual works from six different limited editions: Australian Landscapes (2010), Stickman (2010), The Mission (2011), Undiscovered (2010), Segregation (2012) and Civilised (2012).
