A solo exhibition by the Tibetan contemporary artist Tsherin Sherpa

About

Drawing inspiration from his training as a traditional thangka artist, Sherpa uses Tibetan Buddhist iconography - images of spirits and protector gods to examine the notions of dislocation and relocation. In Tibetan culture, these spirits are highly localised, associated with specific geographic regions. Sherpa's work delves into the consequences of migration and the formation of the Tibetan diaspora, imagining the spirits as they adapt themselves to foreign environments similar to the Tibetan people, settling in new lands. These images projected in Sherpa's work seek to uphold traditions in a manner that not only preserves the visual aspects, but also the essence of it. The works explore the subject of displacement and the necessity of cultural integration for ones survival in this globalized world and how it contributes to the cause for social transformation. A full colour 46 page catalogue will be available including an essay by Katharine P. Burnett. Tsherin Sherpa will be holding a talk on 13 October. Sherpa will be speaking about culture changes, Tibetan diaspora and the intermingling of identities in todays world. The event is free but reservations are suggested. Please RSVP to: info@rossirossi.com, with Artist's Talk in the subject box.
