An exhibition by Michael Dean at Cubitt, featuring newly commissioned works across sculpture and photography in his first solo presentation in a London public gallery. Working consistently with sculpture and photography, Dean extrapolates forms from a typographic system that he has been developing over the past few years. The materiality of communication lies at the root of Dean's work, with language substituted and subordinated by cast concrete works which treat text and type as physical matter, isolated from any clear or singular linguistic classification. Often produced in close consideration to their environment of display, Dean uses the gallery as a site of interaction between different elements and media, locking objects into their own interior and material relations to bind together the spoken, printed and signified word.
