About

Brian O'Doherty, seminal artist, writer and lecturer, based in New York, will be in conversation with Margaret Iversen, Professor in the School of Philosophy and Art History, University of Essex. Brian O'Doherty left Ireland for New York in 1957 and emerged as one of the most influential artists in the American art scene of the 1960s. O'Doherty was director of the Visual Arts Program and subsequently Director of the Media Arts Program, National Endowment for the Arts. He is the author of numerous works of art criticism, including his book American Masters and the influential book Inside the White Cube: Ideologies of the Gallery Space. He has had a profound influence on artists and contemporary art studies. This is a rare opportunity to hear Brian talk about his work and influences and the importance of drawing in his practice.
