About

11th October — 4th November Opening reception: 10th October 2012, 6.00 - 9.00pm Artists talk and discussion evening: 25th October 7 — 9pm Campbell Works is delighted to present a new solo show of photographs and projections by Melanie Stidolph which develop her recent explorations using motion, light and sound detectors. Naturally occurring and constructed events replace the decisive role of the photographer to trigger images of events and objects in tension and suspension. Stidolph's interest in the idea of The Fall begins in popular photographs and art works which engage with the idea of the moment before a perceived destructive or fatalistic event. Taken just before a decisive action, they show the subject on a trajectory that will lead to permanent change. These images then simultaneously contain the shadow of inevitable disaster as well as the preserved embodiment of a futile hope. This new body of work seeks to draw a direct connection between the subject and its role in the making of the image; prioritising action and distancing thought in the production of the photographs. The work engages with the idea of The Fallthrough an allusion to a moral state, a fall from grace, as well as the physical sensation of the gasp and slip in moments of change and loss of control. The surreal potential of displaced objects in flight, held in temporary unity in the picture plane calls attention to the role of external forces or unseen agents of change. The exhibition will be accompanied by a new publication on Melanie Stidolph's work including a new essay by Daniel Campbell Blight. For further press information or images, please contact: info@campbellworks.org The exhibition, publication and production of new work are supported by Arts Council England, London.
