RUPERT ACKROYD: 'INN, INN, INN' at Marsden Woo Gallery Project Space

About

The starting point for Rupert Ackroyd's Project Space installation is the English heritage pub. His screen partition incorporates surface treatments commonly found in the decor of licensed premises, where a mix of authentic, contingent and strategic stylistic elements give rise to a diffuse, romanticised notion of the past. His general points of reference take in a range of time frames that include the domestic interiors of early alehouses and inns, the flamboyantly detailed Victorian public house, late 19th-century revivalist styles and the more recent quasi-historical refurbishments of contemporary brewery chains. But what concerns him is why certain elements are retained and what is added to them, often in an incongruous ad hoc manner. He is interested in such details as where and how original oak panelling is integrated with sections of stained and varnished tongue and groove wainscot, and a softwood window sill is extended with the addition of MDF.
Ackroyd is not concerned with strategies of simulation or pastiche. The humour in his work is understated and in the main arises from his adoption of unselfconscious examples of design and construction as the basis for his practice. The work is undeniably sculpture and he employs its formalist language to emphasize the nuances of his materials and the ways in which they are joined and used. Its dynamic, however, is of rigid formalism altered and broken down by changing conditions and with the concomitant layering of signifiers of time. His installation offers a view of the English pub that is less a critique than an intensive study of the attitudes it holds.

Rupert Ackroyd (born 1978) studied Sculpture at Winchester School of Art (2000 ' 2003) and at the Royal College of Art, London (2003 ' 2005). His recent exhibitions include T Rooms (with work made in collaboration with Matthew Darbyshire) at Tramway, Glasgow and restaged at 176, The Zabludowicz Collection, London (2012); Garage Project with Daniel Pasteiner at Rod Barton Gallery and collaborative works with Alison Turnbull at the Russian Club Gallery and Romeo with Owen Bullett for the Art House Foundation (all in London, 2011); Recent British Sculpture (Curator: Tom Morton) at Grimm Gallery, Amsterdam, Large Assemblage (solo show) at Dicksmith Gallery, London (all 2010); and Moon Under Water (solo show) at Malta Contemporary Art, Valletta, Malta (2009).

Marsden Woo Project Space is curated by Tessa Peters and runs alongside our established programme of solo and small group exhibitions by gallery artists. MW Project Space allows us to respond quickly to significant bodies of innovative work and showcases the work of talented emerging artists and designers and fresh directions in the work of more established artists. The exhibitions are organized at short notice, so please check our website regularly for news on forthcoming shows and events.
