About

Owen Bullett's sculpture represents a kind of contemporary archaeology. The works are responses to different events - things both mundane and momentous. At the forefront of his mind are the things he encounters by chance, such as random situations that occur during his daily cycle-ride to the studio. But he also entertains events that enter at the margins of most people's experience, such as the Higgs boson breakthrough recently announced by the physicists at CERN.

Ancient stone and modern steel, the rough and the refined, heaviness and weightlessness all feature in his material lexicon; he selects his materials and methods of construction with care and in recognition of their complex historical, cultural and physical associations.

His formal investigations concern the physical and psychological force of matter and objects and the experience of variation and continuity found at thresholds. Examples would include the contact and balance of 'inside' and 'outside' space, the intersection of solid and void, as well as other points of connection and separation. It is an inquiry informed, in part, by the theoretical perspective of the Deleuzian fold and one subject to Bullett's empirical testing. In these works there is a sense of the impact of invisible forces on sculptural form and space and of a continuum - rather than simply a snapshot in time.

Owen Bullett studied Sculpture at Camberwell College of Arts (2000 ' 2003) and at the Royal College of Art, London (2003 ' 2005). His recent exhibitions include Pertaining to Things Natural at the Chelsea Physic Garden, London (2012) and Temporary Residency in the Unconscious (with Art House Foundation) at V22 Biscuit Factory, London (2012); Sculpture at Glyndebourne, Glyndebourne, Sussex (2011); Sameness & Difference at The Russian Club Gallery, Early Bird at Standpoint Gallery and Portal (Solo show) at Marsden Woo Gallery Project Space (all in London in 2010). He has undertaken residencies in the UK, France, Malta and Belize. His work is included in public and private collections in the UK and abroad.
