About

AN ABOMINABLE AFFAIR An exhibition of work by John Nicol to celebrate the culmination of an eight month residency at the Muse 269 Gallery/ Studio. Over the last eight months an interest in abominable creatures, Dandies, expensive jumpers, designer toys and pound shops have influenced the work. Working predominantly in sculptural installation, drawing and painting the work is an exploration of themes concerned with conflict, contradiction, aesthetics and value. Commonplace materials such as costume jewellery, carpets, industrial glues, feathers and shiny plastics perform and entice the viewer with colour and surface but are ultimately repugnant and shallowly indifferent. Questions on decadence, appropriation, design and preciousness are raised but unanswered, left only to highlight contradictions within the subject matter. John Nicol was born 1980 in Aberdeen. He graduated from Grays School of Art in 2001 and finished the MFA at Glasgow School of Art in 2011.
