Mind, Body and Art after (Art after) the Internet

About

Talk, discussion and dinner at ANDOR around John Lawrence's new video installation for the space. 6:30 - 7:00: talk from Matt Drage 7:00 - 7:30: panel discussion. Panelists: Ben Vickers, Christopher Thomas, Cadence Kinsey 7:30 - close open discussion and dinner Using John Lawrence's new video installation at ANDOR as an anchor, Matt Drage will argue for the continued relevance of bodily existence and embodied experience in life and art after (art after) the internet. A while ago, the computer monitor was the window to a new god-realm. The world behind it was mathematically ideal, constrained by nothing but the laws of logic; imprinted with pristine, limitless rationality. Above the desktop, blue light was cast like font-water over the face of the ugly nerd; and her spirit was drawn down pale fingertips, out into cyberspace. She was relieved of the curse of bad skin and earthly existence. Now we occupy the space behind the screen with --comparative-- equanimity. We really were uploaded, and art was made about it. Its aesthetic was the aesthetic of the transcendental. But we did not really get to escape our bodies; we were not redeemed, and we all joined Facebook. We are still made of flesh.
