About

Doug Clark, Liz Clay, Luba Diduch, Pippa Galpin, Liz Harding, Alison Harper, Roxanne Jackson, Kay Swancutt, Moira Turner, Kate Wilson. Curated by Dr Jo Dahn. Coordinated by Louis D'Arcy-Reed. This diverse multimedia exhibition gives an insight to the processes, physical and psychological, involved in developing and finalising visual art work from the perspective of the maker. The ten artists exhibiting are all doing practice-based doctoral research at Bath Spa University, which requires them to mine and document their own experiences and thought processes, as well as more traditional academic research. Political ceramics rub up against the haptic ritual of felt making, yarn made from waste materials against conceptual monuments, and photographic prints against web 2.0 technology. The pieces can be read as finished art works or as research sketches, exploring techniques and ideas at the highly specialised level required for PhD. Through a series of video interviews, curator Jo Dahn (herself a specialist in contemporary ceramics, and also course leader of the MA Curatorial Practice at Bath Spa University) teases out the commonalities and contrasts in practice with a series of simple questions presented to the artists in their studios. The works shown also create a dialogue between themselves; highlighting the haptic, provoking modern notions of forgotten skills. The exhibition was first shown at Bath Spa University's Sion Hill campus in Bath, and toured to Aberystwyth University before coming to Salisbury. Louis D'Arcy-Reed is one of Jo Dahn's curating students. In his first solo coordination role, he will lead the touring and installation of the exhibition and join the artists for questions at the preview on 7 September. The preview is free to attend, but to reserve a place e-mail boxoffice@salisburyarts.co.uk or call 01722 321744 Big Draw Workshop: Saturday 6 October 11am — 3pm. Join Alison Harper to make a 3 dimensional drawing using yarn made from old packaging. Free drop-in, suitable for families. Also see: Salisbury Arts Centre's resident ceramic artist Mirka Golden-Hann at Bath Spa University, Corsham Court, 26 September — 24 October 2012.
